In a move that could be the biggest money-making move in the U. S. history, a new drug that blocks the effects of prescription painkillers that have taken off the shelves has been found to increase the risk of heart attack and stroke by up to 20 percent in some patients.
A study that looked at the drug's effect on blood pressure showed it increased risk of heart attacks and strokes by up to 20 percent in people who were 65 or older.
But it wasn't an all-out attack.
The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, tested the drug's effects on blood pressure in healthy people, including two who took an anti-inflammatory called ibuprofen or naproxen.
"The risk of heart attacks and stroke was increased in those who took ibuprofen or naproxen," said study author Dr. David J. Geller, professor of medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center and a leading expert on drug safety.
"When you look at the number of people who take these drugs, it is an absolute risk of cardiovascular disease. And there is no one single risk that is really high enough to put people at risk. But when you compare the risk of these drugs to the risk of cardiovascular disease, we see that there is a significant increase in the risk."
The drug's effect on blood pressure was found to be greater in people who were 65 or older. The new drug, called Voltaren, works by blocking the painkiller's effects on the nerves that control blood pressure.
The results are based on a preliminary study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences last fall that focused on more than a dozen different types of painkiller drugs, including aspirin, naproxen and ibuprofen.
Researchers found that the drug's effect on blood pressure was greater in people who were older than 55 years.
"There are two different classes of drugs. The first class is called "anti-inflammatory medications" and is used to control pain and inflammation," Geller said. "It affects the nerves of the body's blood vessels. So, if you have a heart attack, you're more likely to get a stroke."
The second class of drugs used to control pain and inflammation include non-steroidal anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen or naproxen. These drugs are taken in high doses to reduce inflammation in the body. A study published last year in the journal found that people who took a low-dose version of a painkiller or aspirin were also at an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.
"There are many different drugs in the NSAID class," Geller said.
"We have to know whether the effect is additive or it does not increase the risk of the disease. We are doing a very thorough study to determine the effect of these drugs on the risk of cardiovascular disease."
The research was funded by Pfizer Inc., which manufactures the drug. Pfizer's research was funded by the U. Department of Health and Human Services and its sister company, Johnson & Johnson, maker of Motrin and the painkiller Nurofen.
